THE FANTAIL'S NEST STORY
Michelle and her family would like to take the time to thank you all for your support of her journey with Fantail's Nest NZ. Your overwhelming support and purchases in these last couple weeks of Fantail's Nest being online has been staggering. All purchases will be going to fund Michelle's intensive treatment in Auckland for her tumour, with Michelle remaining positive above all to get well for her family. Thank you x
Most New Zealand parents enjoy getting about with their little one in the pram. Especially on cooler days when it feels great to get out in the crisp, fresh air! But do you find yourself constantly picking your child’s blankets up off the ground when they inevitably kick them off? Lost a shoe or socks?
Enter Michelle Burden – a rural kiwi mum – who dealt with these problems on a day-to-day basis, designer of the Fantail’s Nest NZ 2 in 1 Pram Nest.
“When I became a mum, I was living on a dairy farm near Taupo, NZ. Our chilly morning walks down the tanker track were vital to get us out of the house, plus I was on a mission to get my pre-mum body back! I soon learned that my daughter Molly loved to untuck and kick off her pram blankets, either tangling them in the pram wheels or straight off into the freshly made cow poo on our farm. Something had to change, and I was soon drawn back to my roots of designing, drawing and sewing.”
The first ever Pram Nest, made especially for Molly, was born. It suited Michelle's purposes perfectly, able to now get out and about with her daughter in the pram, essentially blanket-free.
“It was awesome on our morning walks and runs around Lake Taupo. However, I wasn’t prepared for the rapid amount of interest from other mums asking where I had got it from! A year later, after another daughter came along, I decided to make the dream of having my own business become reality. Fantail’s Nest NZ was formed, and I drew the logo, designed the swing tags, and then I was off sewing away from our farmhouse kitchen table.”
When not being a hard-working single mum, this rural-based entrepreneur is busy in her work room sewing pram nests, nappy bags, children’s clothing and more!
Determination to carve a career out of something she loved doing, but that also worked in with her children was the huge drive. Now the Pram Nest is selling all over New Zealand – and even the world – with no signs of slowing down.
Michelle absolutely thrives off the reviews, feedback and support she gets from other kiwi parents and grandparents who love her products. It keeps her going, even when two energetic young girls are creating chaos around the house and workroom! Running a small, rural business has its challenges, but Michelle says they’re worth it.
“I’m not a trained sewer, but I like inventing and making things happen. Believing in myself was the first step. I started off with a Facebook page and five different pattern designs for the Pram Nest, and now I have a fast-growing website, help with the sewing and I visit home and baby expos around the North Island with great success.”
Look out for more exciting additions Michelle is planning on introducing to the Fantail’s Nest NZ range!

A Pram Nest is like a sleeping bag for your pram, that zips up and allows easy access in and out. Machine washable and versatile, the Pram Nest also converts into a sleep sack or snuggle sack for your older child in the home once it's too small for them in the pram.
